How Many of These Tools Are You Using in Your Job Search?

Most job seekers are missing out on opportunities because they are not effectively communicating their background, experience, and the types of positions they are seeking in their resume and they are not looking in all the right places to find new job opportunities.

In 1984 when I graduated from college there was no internet, LinkedIn, or job boards. I actually found my first job through the New York Times Classifieds.  Today there are JUST SO MANY places where you can find new job opportunities and if you are not using all the tools below, you are severely limiting potential opportunities.

You Should Be Using As Many Of These As Possible

  1. Comprehensive resume that explains your background, experience, the types of positions you are seeking along with roles, responsibilities, accomplishments, achievements, quantifiable and measurable metrics, education, certifications, trainings, projects you have worked on, people you have managed, budgets you were responsible for, and then all summarized in a 2-3 paragraph Professional Summary
     
  2. A Cover Letter telling your story
     
  3. Registration on all the major job boards
     
  4. Registration on industry specific job boards
     
  5. Your job board profiles are built out and optimized on all the job boards so companies, hiring managers and recruiters can find you
     
  6. Setting up new job opening alerts that include variations of titles, years of experience, salary, industry, remote or onsite
     
  7. A LinkedIn profile that is optimized and mirrors your resume, but also includes skills, headline, banner image, and boxes checked on the back-end so you are visible to recruiters
     
  8. Researching the top companies in your industry and checking out their career pages
     
  9. Registrations with the top recruiters in your industry
     
  10. Using your own network
     
  11. Seeking both published and unpublished jobs
     
  12. Industry Associations
