I Used to Take Two Trains and a Subway to Work Each Day For 15 Years – Not Any More!
When I graduated from college in 1984, I was living in New York (Long Island). Back then there was no internet, job boards or LinkedIn. I found my first job opportunity through the New York Times newspaper classifieds and landed my first job out of college at Goldman Sachs on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan.
Not only did they pay me a mere $13,000 per year, I had to take 2 trains and a subway, each way everyday with the door to door time being 1 hour and 45 minutes. Throughout the first 10 years of my career at different companies, this was the standard commute. Fast forward almost 40 years, this is now mostly unheard of.
When, where and how we work has completely changed. In the past 25 years, I have started 4 companies, 3 of which were global. I was conducting global business at the dawn of the internet and hiring remote/international workers before remote was even a word. They called it telecommuting back then.
Although the trend towards remote work was picking up speed in the past 10 years, the pandemic dramatically accelerated everything. When the pandemic first started, companies did not have the tools, systems or processes in place to hire and manage remote workers. Today, they have figured it all out.
Work today has morphed into 100% remote, hybrid (3 days a week in the office, 2 days at home), and onsite. Workers today have a choice, and they like it. You no longer have to search for a position with 50 miles of the metro city that you live in. When you look for remote-national positions, across the different job board platforms, and varying your job titles, the number of potential available positions increases exponentially.
You need to know how and where to look. Some of the job boards, such as LinkedIn have a filter for fully remote, hybrid, or onsite. Others like Indeed, Glassdoor and Zip Recruiter have a remote filter. However, the search technology in NOT accurate. And, you don’t want to have to click and open every job description to see if it remote or not. What you do instead is include the world remote at the beginning of the search string. For example – Remote Chief Marketing Officer, Remote Vice President of Business Development, Remote Mechanical Engineer, etc. If you don’t see the word REMOTE in the summary results for each position, then the position is not remote.
